From a virtual “green
fields” situation in 1993, CMS has gained widespread acceptance
by the clinical community and is now not only in place in all of the
39 public hospitals in Hong Kong, but has become an indispensable part
of the care delivery process for nearly 30,000 clinical users. It has
made possible newer initiatives such as the ePR Digital Image Distribution
Project and eSARS due to the existing CMS/ePR infrastructure. The system
has been shown to deliver ‘business’ benefits such as cost
savings, risk management, quality improvements, infection control and
the sharing of patient records.
Presenter: Dr
NT Cheung, Executive Manager, Health Informatics, Hong Kong Hospital
Authority
Dr NT Cheung has been involved in the medical informatics field
since 1985 when, while still at medical school, he became a developer
at a clinical software development house. He joined the Hospital Authority
in 1993 was one of the key developers of the Clinical Management System
(CMS), the HA's integrated clinical workstation.
As head of the Authority’s
Clinical Informatics team, Dr Cheung’s responsibilities range
from strategy through development to implementation details. He continues
to improve the already world-class facilities in the CMS for the documentation
and effective management of diseases and care. Dr Cheung is regularly
invited to speak at international conferences, is on the editorial board
of the International Journal of Medical Informatics and has published
in scientific journals. He hopes to continue with this mix of research
and practice in the future.
